Beckman Girls Basketball Program
The Girls Basketball Program consists of a Varsity and Junior Varsity team. Both teams have consistent philosophies and are fully supportive of one another. Everything is earned in this Program. Effort and hard work is expected every day.
Coaches
Varsity Assistant Coach
Alfonso Directo
Now in his third year as Beckman’s Girls’ Varsity Assistant Coach, Al Directo continues to bring a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience to the program. His coaching career began in Long Beach, where he led both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at the junior high and high school levels. He later coached at University High in Irvine, guiding his team to the CIF semi-finals, before spending 17 years at Foothill High in North Tustin, where the Girls’ Varsity Team won a league championship.Coach Al’s love for sports started early—he began playing basketball at the age of nine and continued through his first year of high school. His athletic ability extended into football, cross country, and track and field, where he excelled as a high jumper. Despite focusing on multiple sports, he never lost touch with basketball, playing pickup games at local parks and through the Boys and Girls Club.Coaching was a natural path for Coach Al, combining his love of basketball with his passion for mentoring young athletes. He firmly believes that true growth comes not only from winning together but also from learning through losses. As he explains, “Teamwork in basketball is the beauty of five people working together as one and not being selfish. I see it as a game made up of fundamentals, energy, happiness, and excitement.”Reflecting on his time at Beckman so far, Coach Al shares, “These past three seasons have been a great experience. The players and their families have been so welcoming and committed to the program. I love seeing the smiles on the girls’ faces as they walk off the court. They work hard every day. Win or lose, they continue to push each other to get better.”Outside of basketball, Coach Al enjoys bike riding, skateboarding, traveling to Hawaii, cliff diving, hiking, paddle boarding, and cheering on the Lakers. Most importantly, he loves spending time with his wife, his three sons and daughter, and his grandchildren. When it comes to basketball—and life—Coach Al believes, “We should just have fun and enjoy the game.”

JV Head Coach
Drew Cullinan
Now in his third season as Beckman High School’s Girls’ Junior Varsity Head Coach, Drew Cullinan has already made a significant impact on the program, leading the JV squad to back-to-back league championships.Prior to his time at Beckman, Coach Drew spent three years coaching boys’ basketball club teams (4th–12th grade) in Rancho Mirage, CA. His passion for coaching and basketball has always been part of his life. “I always wanted to coach since I was a kid. I love basketball and always look forward to seeing the growth that takes place over the course of a season,” he says. Growing up, Drew spent time watching his dad coach teams for Laguna Beach High and Dana Hills High, where he later played basketball himself. When asked what he enjoys most about basketball, his joy for the game is undeniable: “Everything, every single thing!”Drew’s coaching philosophy centers on the belief that a team must always follow the “3 E’s”: effort, energy, and execution. He believes that when a team brings all of these each day, they will not only become more successful players but also stronger individuals off the court. His proudest moments as a coach come from watching his athletes push through adversity, grow as leaders, and achieve goals together—like winning consecutive league titles.Outside of basketball, Coach Drew enjoys spending time with his wife, Mari, and their son, Dominic. As a family, they love visiting the zoo, Disneyland, and amusement parks, as well as playing catch, practicing swings, and shooting hoops on the mini hoop.
